Accord top priority to research universities: Stalin

Chennai, Nov 4 : Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin today called upon Universities to accord top priority for research studies, and provide access to higher education.

Delivering the fourth Convocation address of the Tamil Nadu Open University here, he said Universities in the state should realise that research studies were more important than graduation.They must provide opportunities to students to take up research studies.

Mr Stalin said it was a matter of pride that three Tamils had won the prestigious Nobel prize. But except Sir C V Raman, others had won the prize by pursuing their higher education and research in foreign countries.

''We can take pride only when the Tamils win the Nobel prize for their research works done in our country'', Mr Stalin said and called upon Indian Universities to involve themselves to make this possible.

He also exhorted Universities to produce not only educated youths, but also ''employable youths'', by providing them industrial and management training, and special coaching to face interviews and develop their English speaking skills.

The Tamil Nadu government would be willing to support the universities by providing techical and infrastructural facilities in this endevour, he assured.
