Andhra University(AU)Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju today described Mahatma Jyothirao Govindarao Phule as one of the 'greatest social reformers' of India, who sacrificed his life for the upliftment of backward classes and downtrodden in the society.

Mr. Raju paid rich tributes to Mahatma Jothirao Phule on the occasion of his Birth Anniversary celebrations organised in Andhra University here.

He said that Jyothirao Phule was a great thinker, scholar, writer and activist, who led campaigns to remove the economic and social handicaps in the society. He said Phule believed in overthrowing the social system in which man has been deliberately made dependent on others.

He called upon the students to follow the teachings of Mahatma Jyothirao Phule in establishing a more just society based on equality and equal opportunities to all.

Mr. Raju garlanded the statue of Mahatma Jyothirao Phule in Andhra University.

E.A.Narayana, Rector, Prof.K.Ramamohana Rao, Registrar, Principals, Deans, Officers, research scholars, students and others offered floral tributes to Mahatma Jyothirao Phule.
