WHO projects 88 million diabetics in India by 2030
Ahmedabad, Nov 6 : The World Health Organisation (WHO) has dubbed India as the diabetics capital of the world and projected the number of diabetics in the country to be around 88 million by 2030, a senior diabelotogist said today.
At present, about 40 million population in India has been estimated to be diabetic, according to Dr Mayur Patel, Organising Chairman of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) at its 37th annual conference here today.
The conference was formally inaugurated by Gujarat Assembly Speaker Ashok Bhatt by lighting the traditional lamp. He called upon the scientific community to expose those attempting to mislead the common man propagating about instant remedy for various diseases.
Recalling the unique position held by India as the land of traditional knowledge, Mr Bhatt said the scientific community, after proper study, should identify the proper Yoga exercise for diabetics. Traditional Indian lifestyle itself was the answer to many ailments being faced by a large number of people at present, he said.
Pointing out that like the success of the Satyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi from the bank of Sabarmati river in the city, he said any initiative launched from the Sabarmati river bank would be successful.
RSSDI President K M Prasanna Kumar said the society launched with a meagre membership of 10 doctors in 1972 had at present more than 4,500 members. It had nine state chapters and provide grants for research also.
Several national and international experts in diabeties treatment are attending the three-day conference being held here after a gap of 11 years.
