President Pranab Mukherjee will formally inaugurate the new integrated Terminal Building of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata on Jan 20.
Saugata Roy, MP and Chairman of the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) announced this at a press conference here on Thursday.
Airport Director Dr. B P Sharma and other senior officials were present during the press meet.
Services at the new terminal would be fully operational shortly after the formal opening.
Construction of the new terminal commenced in November 2008. This integrated terminal is to serve both international and domestic services.
The new terminal has attracted the interest of airlines that are considering extending their operations to Kolkata. These include Malaysia Airlines,Xiamen Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Japan Airlines and Fly Dubai.
Work on the secondary runway extension, rapid exit taxiways and parking bays are also in completion progress.
The secondary runway has been extended by 400 m (1,300 ft) on the northern side.
On the southern side, 1000 ft extension work is under way along with the construction of a new taxiway.
The secondary runway has been fitted with CAT-I facilities for night use. The primary runway has been upgraded from CAT-I to CAT-II ILS facility to help aircraft landing in poor visibility.
A number of measures have been taken in association with police authorities, local municipal bodies and other agencies to reduce and avoid prime hour congestion on the approach ways and the main VIP and Jessore Road inter-sections just outside the airport.
