Arunachal launches programme to boost agriculture
Arunachal Pradesh Government is proactively promoting the agriculture sector. The state has achieved tremendous growth in crop production in the 11th plan and is trying to improve it even further.
'Food and Farm Income Security' was the theme of 3-day long Krishi Expo and Kisan Mela in Itanagar, the first such fair in the state, which was attended by thousands of farmers.
Governor , General (Retired) J J Singh and Chief Minister Nabam Tuki launched Chief Minister's Agriculture Mechanization Programme and distributed cheques and tractor keys to the beneficiaries. The state government will provide 100 tractors, 300 power
tillers, 700 pumping sets and 500 rice mills to the beneficiaries within this year.
"Food and farmers' income security has been our main focus, agenda and we are committed to redecorate this sector in to a paying profession. Delighting the inadequacy of financial resources of the small and marginal farmers the state government has decided to enhance assistance to the farmers to purchase costly farm machinery," said Nabam Tuki.
A permanent Krishi expo centre at Karsingsha would be constructed to provide adequate funds from special plan assistance so that the farmers can sell their produce from a common platform.
Congratulating the organizers of the farm-oriented event, the governor exuded confidence that the mela would provide opportunities to the participants to learn more about new
technologies and methods for increasing agricultural production.
"In horticulture sector, the yearly growth registered has been 195 per cent. I believe, you have the potential to take it to 1,000 percent because we can grow more oranges on the foothills," said J J Singh.
Agriculture and its allied sectors engage 70 per cent of the people in Arunchal Pradesh.
The farmers can increase their incomes through diversification of crops and commercialization. Therefore, special emphasis is being placed on floriculture, orchids, cane, bamboo and other market sensitive forest produce.
