In a shocking incident, a teacher of a private polytechnic institution was suspected to have committed suicide by hanging at his house, after he was allegedly humiliated and assaulted by a group of his students at Mookambigai Nagar, here today.

Police sources said the body of Subramanian, a mechanical engineering graduate working as a teacher in the polytechnic institute, was found hanging from the roof in his house this morning.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Subramanian reprimanded a group of students for creating ruckus in the institution under inebriated condition yesterday. The van driver of the institution Sudhakaran reported the unruly behavior of the students to the teacher. Enraged over this, the students under the pretext of asking apology, took Subramanian in a car to the ground of Government Medical College Hospital last evening, where few more students joined them. The students assaulted the teacher severely and warned him of dire consequences, if he questioned their behavior.

The students later went to the house of driver Sudhakaran and beat him up.

He was found hanging this morning. His body was removed to the government hospital for post-mortem. Police have arrested five students and are searching others involved in the attack.
