Will continue to serve Varuna regardless of office: Siddaramaiah

Mysuru, Oct 5

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress Working Committee member Siddaramaiah on Monday said he would continue to serve the people of Varuna constituency irrespective of whether he remained in power or held an elected position.

Speaking at an event in Dasanuru village in the Varuna Assembly constituency, Siddaramaiah said he had spent more than four decades in politics, had been elected as an MLA eight times and had served as Chief Minister for eight years.

"I have been in politics for more than 40 years and have won elections eight times. I have served as Chief Minister for eight years. I had told Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi that I would submit my resignation whenever he asked me to, and I have kept my word," he said.

Siddaramaiah said he had stepped down from the Chief Minister's post as he had promised.

"I had said that whenever LoP Rahul Gandhi asks me to resign, I will do so. I have acted accordingly," he said.

Recalling his political association with Varuna, Siddaramaiah said the people of the constituency had played an important role in his political career.

"I have won from the Varuna constituency three times and have served as Chief Minister twice. The blessings of the people of Varuna are the reason why I became Chief Minister twice and Leader of the Opposition twice," he said.

He said he was satisfied with the development work undertaken in the constituency during his tenure.

"During my four terms, I have undertaken development works worth more than Rs 5,000 crore in the Varuna constituency. I am satisfied with the work I have done. I have made efforts to work for the poor," Siddaramaiah said.

He said he would continue to serve Varuna even if he was not an MLA.

"Whether I am in power or not, I will continue to serve you. I will never forget Varuna. Whether I am an MLA or not, I will continue to serve the people of the constituency," he said.

Siddaramaiah said he had experienced both victories and defeats during his 40-year political career and expressed satisfaction that he had kept his word to the people.

"I have the satisfaction and happiness of having acted according to my words. I will remain an MLA for another one-and-a-half years," he said.

He also appealed to the people of Varuna to extend the same support and blessings they had given him to his son and former MLA Yathindra Siddaramaiah.

Meanwhile, people of Varuna urged Siddaramaiah to contest the 2028 Assembly elections as well. However, he did not respond to the demand and concluded his speech.

Siddaramaiah also said Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar was now leading the government and expressed confidence that he would continue the programmes initiated by the previous government.
