India targets 10 pc of global 6G patents, says Scindia

India wants to shape global 6G standards and capture 10 per cent of worldwide patents in the technology, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said. Speaking at the IFQM Symposium 2026, he noted that India was absent from standard-setting in the 2G to 5G eras but is now an active participant. The Bharat 6G Alliance is leading the effort, with several patents already filed.

India aims to shape global 6G standards, target 10 pc share in worldwide patents: Scindia

New Delhi, Oct 5

India is positioning itself to become a key architect of next-generation telecom technology, with a target of contributing 10 per cent of global 6G patents and playing an active role in setting international standards, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Monday.

Speaking to the media and addressing the IFQM Symposium 2026, Scindia said quality, innovation and standardisation would be critical pillars in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.

He stressed that India's global reputation in the coming decades would depend not only on its manufacturing capabilities but also on the quality and reliability of its products and technologies.

The minister said the country is witnessing the emergence of an ecosystem that promotes excellence, quality standards and innovation across industries, institutions and supply chains. Such efforts, he noted, are essential for enhancing India's competitiveness in global markets.

Highlighting India's growing role in telecom technology, Scindia said the country was not involved in setting standards during the 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G eras and largely adopted frameworks developed elsewhere. However, the situation is changing with the advent of 6G technology.

"For the first time in the history of mobile communications, India is not merely following standards established by other countries. India is now becoming an active participant in the global standard-setting process," he said.

According to the minister, India is evolving from being a "standard taker" to a "standard maker" and a developer of technology platforms, reflecting the country's expanding research and innovation capabilities.

Scindia said the Bharat 6G Alliance is working towards strengthening India's position in the emerging technology landscape and helping the country secure a significant share of global intellectual property related to 6G. India has already filed a number of patents linked to next-generation telecom technologies, he added.

The minister said the target of contributing 10 per cent of global 6G patents is part of a broader strategy to ensure India plays a leadership role in the future digital economy.

Beyond technological achievements, he said, the effort is aimed at strengthening India's influence in global technology governance and innovation.
