Zakia Jafri could contest from Varanasi
BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi could face more competition on Varanasi Lok Sabha seat as Zakia Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was burnt to death in his house at Gulbarga Society of Ahmedabad during the Gujarat riots of 2002, is expected to contest from the seat.
Zakia ,70, will make her decision in a day or two, confirmed a family member from Ahmedabad today.
"We are seriously considering the proposal and a decision would be announced within a day or two," the family member said.
Lok Dal has offered Zakia to contest on the party ticket from Varanasi and even assured her that she will only need to file her nomination and the campaigning would be done by the party.
Lok Dal president Sunil Singh told UNI here today that Zakia would be the only eligible secular candidate against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and it is the duty of other secular parties to withdraw their candidate and support her.
"We have asked her just to file her nominations and she would not be required to campaign, which will be done entirely by the party," Mr Singh said, while confirming that Zakia is seriously considering to contest from Varanasi on Lok Dal ticket.
Zakia had been fighting battle against Mr Modi for the last over a decade and is determined to take it to a meaningful end. Following her husband's brutal death, Zakia filed a case against Mr Modi and 62 others in 2006.
The constituency goes to polls on May 12.
