FRI, Dehradun to host International Poplar Commission session

Dehradun, Jun 10 : For the first time in India, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, has been awarded the prestigious International offer to host a Session of International Poplar Commission (IPC) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, United Nations which aims to promote the cultivation, conservation and utilisation of poplars and willows.

The 24th session of IPC is scheduled to be held at Dehradun from October 8 to 12, 2012. The event focuses on scientific discussions on poplars and willows.

It provides a suitable platform for policy makers, forest managers, scientists, academicians, industries and growers, connected with poplars and willows, to share Reserch and Development innovations and marketing, trade issues on these trees across the globe, exchange ideas for further cooperation and promotion of these valuable resources for myriad benefits.

About 300 delegates, including delegates from various International organisations working on forestry and from 37 Countries representing countries like the US, Argentina, Germany, Canada, China, Iran, Iraq, UK, Japan, South Africa, Pakistan, Portugal, Korea, Chile, Romania, New Zealand, are expected to participate in the conference.

Dr V K Bahuguna, Director General, Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education convened a meeting of senior officers in the council yesterday, which was attended by Dr S S Negi, Director, FRI, M S Garbyal, Dr V R R Singh, among others to discuss the modalities for successful hosting of the event.
