New Delhi, Aug 30 : A 13-year-old boy drowned in the swimming pool of a prominent public school here Friday evening.
According to the police, Mohammad Nadir, was discovered lying dead in the swimming pool of Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, Friday evening under "mysterious circumstances".
He was admitted to the school under the economically weaker section quota.
"Nadir was reportedly discovered at the school's swimming pool at around 5.30 p.m. by the swimming coach," sources said.
However, the police are still unclear how Nadir drowned in the pool.
He used to come to the school for additional coaching classes between 4-6 p.m.
"We dropped him at school around 4 for his daily coaching. The tuition classes were conducted in the school itself," said Nadir's inconsolable mother Zayda.
"Later we received a call from the school telling us that his body was found floating in the pool and they had rushed him to the Sahi Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," she said.
Nadir's father Mohammad Salim is a motor mechanic and works in the Mathura Road area.
Blaming the school for the death, the parents said the school authorities should have kept a watch on where the student was going and how he reached the pool.
"The school authorities don't have an answer to how he went inside the locked swimming pool where he was later discovered by their own swimming coach when he opened the pool," a senior police official said.
"As the pool was locked, the only possibility seems that he somehow scaled the wall and went in the pool and ultimately drowned. But even that is the school authorities' negligence," the officer added.
Nadir, his five sisters and their parents lived at Sarai Kale Khan area of south Delhi.
"He was a bright student. He wanted to become an engineer and help his family," said a neighbour, Sanjay Kumar.
The police are questioning teachers, coaching staff and security personnel to find out who last saw the boy.
Further investigations are on.
