Jaipur witnesses high demand for Lahriya sarees

By Lokendra Singh, Jaipur, Aug.14 : Traditional Lahariya sarees are in demand in Jaipur markets, as the festive season is approaching.

Every year during Monsoon (mid-July to August) a large number of women here visit markets only to purchase Lahariya sarees.

Available in various colours and printed designs, Lahariya Sarees have been an all time fascination of women here, and thus, the local markets are flooded with these sarees during these days.

The prime time for the sale of Lahariya Sarees begins with Teej and continues till Raksha Bandhan, the siblings' festival, in Rajasthan.

Shops and showrooms are doing a good business this year.

Some shopkeepers say that they have got orders from off shore markets too for the popular Lahariya sarees.

"Lahariya is very important because in Jaipur Lahariya Sarees are worn by the women. The design is like waves that are similar to the wind waves that flow in the monsoon season." Said Gayatri, costumer

During this month, saree traders do business in crores of rupees as buyers from across the country arrive in Jaipur for Lahariya sarees only.

It is said that the fashion for wearing Lahariya was started by the Royal family of Jaipur long ago. The trend has continued till date.

In Jaipur alone there are over 300 to 400 shops and showrooms, selling the Lahariya Sarees during the ongoing Sawan month.

Earlier, only married women preferred wearing Laharia sarees, now even young girls like to wear them with élan.

Married ladies were the only ones who wore the Lahariya pattern but nowadays young girls also like wearing the Lahariya pattern in salwar suit, skirts, tops, modern scarfs and Dupattas.

"It is a big market. Because every year ladies like to buy Lahariya, the requirement has been on the increase every year," said Vijay Goel, one shopkeeper

Traders in Jaipur wait entire year for Sawan month, as most of them do a good business during this auspicious month. Lahariya sarees range between rupees 100 to 10,000.

It is estimated that in this 30-day period over 100 crore rupees Lahariya sarees and other clothes would be sold.

"Lahariya starts with artificial Chiffon worth Rs.150 and then Diamond and Heavy Chiffon worth Rs. 200 without embroidery. With embroidery it costs Rs. 8,000 to 10,000,"said Vijay Goel, a shopkeeper

In Jaipur alone, over 10,000 people are directly of indirectly engaged in Lahariya sarees manufacturing.
