Sony plans to capture 20 pc market share in notebook PCs segment
Kolkata, Nov 10: Sony India today announced its plans to capture 20 per cent of the Indian consumer notebook PCs market with the combination of improved product design, channel expansion and new communication strategy.
Addressing a press conference after launching Sony's new laptop 'VAIO X' here, Sony India Head, IT Marketing Sachin Thapar said company's business in notebook PCs segment grew by 15 per cent this fiscal, while the growth was 8 per cent last fiscal.
The over-all market growth in this segment was 12 per cent in FY2010 and it was expected to grow at a rate of 30 per cent in FY2011, he added.
Mr Thapar said in this financial year Sony was aiming at selling around 1,80,000 to 2,00,000 units of laptops across the country.
In West Bengal, the market share was expected to reach nine per cent from seven per cent in FY10 up from the current seven per cent, he added.
Stating that the company was adopting the marketing strategies like unique products, channel expansion and marketing communication, he said Sony India had forayed into 150 cities and the company would foray into 50 more cities in 2010.
The company currently had 700 outlets and in the next year it would have a total of 1,000 outlets in India.
''We are planning to launch cheaper prices products in the future. We are not focussing on lower-end, but we are focussing on enhancing our product line-up,'' he said, adding Sony currently had a wide range of product line-up for laptops starting from Rs 27,000 to Rs 1,40,000.
''In every three to four months we upgrade our line-up. This has been practised for last five years,'' he added.
The IT segment contributes around 13 per cent of Sony India's total revenue, he informed.
On the Sony's newly launched laptop 'VAIO X', Mr Thapar said, ''It is the world's lightest and ultra slim laptop. At only 655 gm and just about half-inch thin, VAIO X is setting a new benchmark in notebook technology as the world's lightest notebook.''
