Wolverhampton, June 11

English Football club Wolverhampton Wanderers FC has sacked their head coach, Rob Edwards, along with the coaching team, after just seven months following their relegation from the Premier League.

The 43-year-old was appointed in November on a three-and-a-half-year deal to replace Vitor Pereira but was unable to stop Wolves from being relegated to the Championship after eight years in the top tier.

Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League, 21 points from safety. Edwards also failed to impress with the side, as he was able to win only five matches out of 30, which resulted in his early exit.

"This has been an extremely difficult decision. Following the end of the season, we undertook a thorough review of every aspect of the football operation. This process involved careful consideration of many factors and extensive reflection on what we believe is required to help the club progress over the coming years," Wolves Executive Chairman Nathan Shi said in an official statement.

"Our decision was not about character, professionalism, or dedication. It was about determining what we believe gives Wolves the strongest opportunity to move forward from a sporting perspective. While there were positive signs and areas of progress, we ultimately concluded that a different football direction would better align with the style, identity, and level of competitiveness we want to establish at the club," he added.

Nathan also thanked Edwards for his hard work with the club and informed the fans that the process of appointing a new coach is underway.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Rob and his departing staff for their professionalism, commitment, and hard work throughout their time at Compton Park, and wish them every success in the future," he added.

"The process of appointing a new head coach is already underway, with the club focused on identifying a leader who can help deliver the next phase of Wolves' sporting development. Further updates will be provided in due course," Nathan concluded.

Honestly, what did they expect? You appoint someone mid-season, and the team is already struggling. Edwards wasn't given enough time or support. The owners need to look at themselves as well. 😤

As a Wolves fan, I'm torn. Edwards tried hard but the results were just not there. 21 points from safety is a huge gap. We need someone with Championship experience who can rebuild the squad. Onwards and upwards, hopefully! 🙏

Good decision. 30 matches and only 5 wins is unacceptable at any level. The Championship is tough and they need a manager who can hit the ground running. Who's next? Maybe someone like Carlos Corberan?

It's sad when a manager loses his job, but football is ruthless. At least the club is being honest about their review process. Hope Edwards bounces back elsewhere. Also, why did they give him a 3.5 year deal if they were going to sack him in 7 months? 🤔

Edwards was a caretaker appointment who couldn't turn things around. It's the right move for the club. The Championship is no joke - we saw what happened to teams like Sheffield United and Luton. Wolves need a proper rebuild, not just a quick fix. All the best to Edwards though.
