Polling progresses peacefully in Assam by-election
Guwahati, Nov 07 : Close to 50 per cent polling has been recorded till noon in both the Assembly constituencies of Assam where the by-elections are being held today.
Official sources informed that polling began at 0700 hours as people queued up to exercise their franchise in the two constituencies of South Salmara and Dhekiajuli.
Polling has been peaceful so far and security arrangement has been tight across the constituencies to thwart any untoward incidents.
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been used for the by-election in all the polling centres.
The by-election was necessitated following the election of the sitting MLAs to the Lok Sabha.
In Dhekiajuli, the contest is likely to centre around AGP candidate Shiba Charan Sahu and Congress's Bhimananda Tanti, while CPI(M)'s Gunadhar Sundi and AIUDF's Lenin Basumatary could play the spoilers.
The contest in South Salmara is expected to be between AIUDF's Abdur Rahman Ajmal and Congress's Wajed Ali Choudhury.
While Dhekiajuli was AGP's domain, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had held South Salmara in the last Assembly election.
