Delhi's initiative to track carbon emissions very timely: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi, Nov 6 : Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh has termed the Delhi government's initiative to set up a system for mapping carbon emission as the right thing at the right time.

Addressing a seminar on Climate Change here on Thursday, Ramesh described the Delhi Government''s initiative is commendable and very timely.

He also said India is probably the most vulnerable land in the world as far as climate change and related adverse trends are concerned.

"So on monsoon, on glaciers, on sea levels and on natural resources we are extremely vulnerable. Maldives is vulnerable only from mean sea level point of view; Bangladesh is also vulnerable only from mean sea level point of view. That''s why I said that there is no country in the world out of 192 countries which is as vulnerable across four dimensions as India is," he said.

He also released a publication titled Climate Change Agenda of Delhi 2009-2012 and congratulated Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for taking the lead and making Delhi a pioneer state in this direction.

Delhi is the first state in India to come out with an Action Plan to tackle the Climate Change. Many other states are in process of following suit and prepare their Action Plans.

Among the states, which are in the penultimate stage of finalising the strategies, are Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
