NE Monsoon turns vigorous, heavy rains in Tamil Nadu capital
Chennai, Nov 4 : After playing hide and seek for the last couple of days, the North East Monsoon turned vigorous, thanks to the persistence of low pressure, as Chennai City and its periphery experienced heavy rainfall this evening.
The rainfall was so heavy that it not only brought respite from the sweltering heat, but also inundated roads, resulting in traffic snarls.
Several students, who were returning from school, were put to hardship as the showers, which began around 1430 hrs, lasted for more than an hour.
Weather Office sources told UNI that during the one-hour period, the Nungamabkkam observatory recorded 33 mm of rainfall.
Traffic jam was witnessed in several areas due to water-logging.
The city and suburbs had been experiencing rainfall on and off in the last two days.
However, the weather remained extremely hot after the delayed North East Monsoon set on October 28 as against the scheduled October 21.
The Weather Office sources said the trough of Low Pressure over the South West Bay persisted and lay centred between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu Coasts, promising more rainfall for the next 24 hours.
Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall or thundershowers were likely to occur at Coastal and Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu and at a few places over Interior Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall was also likely at several places over North Coastal Districts with isolated showers at some places in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai would have generally cloudy sky with a possibility of one or two spells of rain or thundershowers.
