Yet to play our best game: Ramdin
Bangalore, Oct 19 : Denesh Ramdin is a vital cog in the Trinidad and Tobago machinery. The West Indies wicket keeper has a mature head on his young shoulders.
The talented player in a tete-a-tete with the official website during a practice session at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
On his advice to Pollard in the middle during the encounter against NSW
I told him we are in a situation similar to the one we found ourselves in, in New Zealand - 90 odd runs required in 40 odd balls. If you bat right down to the last over and last ball, you give yourself a chance to get closer to the target. Unfortunately I got run out but I would have loved to be there with him [Pollard] till the end. But he knows his capabilities and won the game for us.
On T and T losing wickets at regular intervals
Every time we had the momentum going our way, the loss of a wicket pushed us back. That is why we needed so many in the last few overs. We tried to bring down the run rate. But that is the way cricket goes - there were couple of mix-ups here and there. Those were the mistakes we have to learn from.
About the mood in the T and T camp
All our guys are enjoying their game. The camaraderie is very good. We are not over confident. We are just trying to do what we are good at. We are going to play to the best of our abilities and things are going fine at this point of time.
On what was expected of them when they left the Caribbean
We knew we were capable. The type of players we have in our team, if a couple of them get going on their day, you know how destructive they can be. The first four have not clicked in this tournament so far. So they know what they have to look forward to in the next couple of games for the team.
On his transformation into a dangerous lower order bat in Twenty20
See how the game has evolved in the last two years. Lots of players are trying new shots. I practice all kinds of shots. While practicing, I put myself in a situation where I need to get 10 or 12 runs per over. I set myself high standards and goals. When it comes to a situation like last night, I was in a position where I know I could do it. When Pollard and I were around and while he was trying to get himself in, I took my chances and kept the momentum going.
On simulating match situations during practice
Before we came to India, we practiced these situations back home which were like getting 50 or 60 runs off the last four or five overs. Pollard was the guy who did this for the team at regular intervals.
On acquiring leadership qualities
I think the way I analyse the game, read and understand certain parts of the game helps me work on
batsmen. I speak to Daren [Ganga] about when to make field changes and I have learnt from Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan. I have put all this learning together and this where I am today.
On what he feels are concerns for his team
Not much. We need to sharpen up our bowling department and running between the wickets. I think our all round game is coming together. We are yet to play our best game.
