The Congress' denial for renomination for the Rajasthan AssemBly polls in 2008 to Lal Chand Kataria proved to be the blessing in disguise for the first-time MP from Jaipur Rural.

He was today entrusted the responsibility as Minister of State for Defence in the Manmohan Singh Council of Ministers.

Sailing on favourable caste equation, Kataria(44)was first time chosen by the Congress in 2003 for assembly elections from Amer constituency of Jaipur.

He had won the polls making his maiden entry to the state legislature. However, in 2008 he was denied party renomination for the seat and the ticket was allotted to Ganga Sahai.

Soon within six months in mid-2009, situation changed and the party had given Kataria ticket for Lok Sabha polls from newly-created Jaipur rural constituency that he won in a tough contest.

Since the dropping of Mahadev Singh Khandela from the Union Council of Ministers, the party's hunt for a Jat substitute ended at Kataria's name.

Khandela's loss had become a big political breakthrough for Kataria to pave his way into Defence Ministry.
