Coal India Q2 profit jumps 53 pc, declares Rs 10.25 interim dividend

Mumbai, Oct 29

State-owned coal mining giant Coal India Limited on Thursday reported a 53 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit for the second quarter of FY27, aided by strong revenue growth.

The company's consolidated net profit rose to Rs 6,516 crore in the July-September quarter from Rs 4,259 crore in the corresponding period last financial year, according to its stock exchange filing.

Revenue from operations increased 20.9 per cent to Rs 44,179 crore during the quarter, compared with Rs 36,553 crore a year earlier.

At the operating level, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) climbed 28.9 per cent year-on-year to Rs 8,499 crore from Rs 6,593 crore in the year-ago period.

The company's EBITDA margin improved to 19.2 per cent from 18 per cent in the corresponding quarter last year.

Alongside its quarterly results, Coal India's board approved a second interim dividend of Rs 10.25 per equity share for FY27 on shares with a face value of Rs 10 each.

The company has fixed November 4, 2026, as the record date for determining shareholder eligibility for the dividend. Coal India said the dividend will be paid on or before November 27, 2026.

The miner also advised shareholders to update their know-your-customer (KYC) details with depository participants to facilitate direct credit of dividend payments into their bank accounts.

The company said dividends will be disbursed only through electronic modes approved by the Reserve Bank of India, and no physical dividend warrants, cheques or demand drafts will be issued.

Coal India's September-quarter performance reflected a mixed outcome, with revenue and net profit registering strong double-digit growth while operating earnings and margins missed analyst expectations.

The gap between revenue growth and operating profitability is likely to remain a key focus area for investors assessing the company's cost structure and earnings trajectory in the coming quarters.

What the report makes clear: Coal India's Q2 FY27 profit, revenue, EBITDA and dividend figures are stated with year-ago comparisons.

Still open: The report does not yet say what drove the margin shortfall against analyst expectations or how cost pressures may evolve.

Another way to look at it: Strong profit growth alongside softer margins puts the focus on cost structure as much as topline gains.
