Assam polls: Five schools set ablaze

By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Feb 10 : Large scale violence flared in lower Assam ahead of the third and final phase of panchayat polls, which will be held on Feb 12.

Miscreants set ablaze five schools and several houses in two markets in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) areas in Goalpara district on Sunday evening, officials said.

Unidentified persons set ablaze at Damara LP School, Habanggiri LP School under Dudhnoi police station and Goroimari LP School, Dariduri MV School and Chutki LP School.

"After the incident the buildings of the schools were damaged," a district administration official said.

The miscreants also torched several houses at Boko Singora weekly market on Sunday evening.

On Saturday night, miscreants set two schools, one Gaon Panchayat office, one wooden bridge and a camp of CRPF in the district.

Top police officials had rushed to the disrupted areas and launched search operation against the miscreants.

Several organizations have called 36 hours public curfew in RHAC area protest against holding the panchayat poll in RHAC area.

Meanwhile, the campaign for the third phase poll had concluded on Sunday.

The poll will be held in eight districts of the state on February 12 for the 135 seats of Zila Parishad, 743 seats of Anchalik Parishad, 743 seats of Gaon Panchayat President and 7430 seats of Gaon Panchayat member.
