MP: Datia bypoll records 61.48 pc voter turnout till 3 pm

The Datia assembly by-election is witnessing steady polling on Thursday, with approximately 61.48 per cent voter turnout recorded till 3 pm, according to the data released by the Election Commission of India.
Voting is underway peacefully across the constituency under tight security and continuous monitoring by election authorities.
Earlier, the voter turnout stood at 48.91 per cent till 1 pm and similarly, 32.53 per cent was recorded till 11 am and 12.94 per cent till 9 am, reflecting a steady increase in voter participation during the day.
Datia Collector Swapnil Wankhade said polling commenced peacefully at 7 am across all polling stations and no untoward incident had been reported. He emphasised that all 291 polling stations are under close surveillance, with security personnel deployed across the constituency and the administration was monitoring the polling through CCTV from a central control room.
BJP and Congress are the main parties contesting the by-poll and leaders of both parties are claiming their victory.
Senior BJP leader Narottam Mishra, BJP candidate from the seat Ashutosh Tiwari and the Congress nominee Ghanshyam Singh cast their votes and appealed to people to exercise their franchise.
Speaking to reporters after voting, Mishra said he voted with the intention that the Bharatiya Janata Party would win in the constituency and boost Datia's development, adding that he expected good voter turnout in the constituency.
BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari said there was great enthusiasm among the public and everyone was voting for development, good governance and the overall progress of Datia. People are exercising their franchise without any fear.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh appealed to voters to participate in large numbers and expressed confidence that the party would secure a decisive victory in the by-election.
Polling for the Datia by-election commenced this morning and would continue until 6 pm. The counting of votes will take place on August 3.
The Datia Assembly seat fell vacant following the disqualification of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti on April 2.
