4000 take part in Sabarmati Cyclothon for environmental awareness
Thousands of people participated in the Sabarmati Cyclothon on Sunday, which was held to spread environmental awareness.
About 4000 participants turned up for the event in Ahmedabad, which was organised by the municipal corporation, and was flagged off by Gujarat Finance Minister Nitin Patel.
Praising the organisers of the event, Patel said: "There are categories for 105 kilometres, 48 kilometres and 16 kilometres for the people to participate in. A prize money of Rupees 2,00,000 (USD 3,717.96) is there and also a participatory prize of Rupees 1500 (USD 27.88) for everyone by the corporation has been announced."
A sizeable number of participants were elderly, who displayed their flair to remain fit in their advancing years.
"I have been riding bicycles from the last twelve years alone. I have given up driving cars and two wheeler vehicles because our environment is being polluted a lot. Also, our fuel is also getting costlier day by day. It is really difficult to get it. So I appeal to all that we should ride bicycles to help the environment," said Bhagwati, 77.
The organizers plan to hold it annually.
