Punjab assembly passes 15 new bills, withdraws 2 passed bills

The Punjab assembly today passed 15 new bills and withdrew two bills, passed by the House earlier, in the absence of opposition Congress who had boycotted the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill, introduced in the House today, was withdrawn following certain objections raised by BJP MLA and former minister Manoranjan Kalia.

The 15 bills passed today included the DAV University bill, the Desh Bhagat University bill and the Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling bill.

The other bills passed today were the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Bill, the Punjab Value Added Tax (amendment) Bill, the Punjab Safety Measures for Prevention and Control of Fire Bill, the Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training (amendment) Bill, the Punjab Privately Managed Affiliated and Punjab Government Aided Colleges, Pensionary Benefit Scheme 1996 (Repeal) Bill, the Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets (amendment) Bill, the Punjab Courts (amendment) Bill, the Punjab Land Revenue (amendment) Bill, the Punjab State Commission for Minorities Bill, the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation (amendment and validation) Bill, the Punjab Backward Classes Land Development and Finance Corporation (amendment and validation) Bill and the Northern India Canal and Drainage (Punjab amendment) Bill.

The two bills which were withdrawn were the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Bill, 2008 and the Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling Bill, 2010. These bills had not been granted assent so far.
