Four persons were thrashed by angry locals after one of them attempted to rape an underage girl while she was sleeping in her house yesterday, in the Akamoll ward of Amaulim village, 60 kms from Panaji, in Goa.
The 12-year-old, belonging from a tribal community was sleeping besides her sister on the floor when a person slept by her side taking advantage that her parents were away.
A neighbour told reporters that she initially thought it was her father but when he began touching her inappropriately, she woke up and raised the alarm. The villagers rushed to her house but by then the accused had escaped.
He returned back after a couple of hours, this time, with three others. The villagers, who were now alert, questioned the foursome while they were entering the victim's house.
They identified themselves as Rajkumar Sukha, Rampal Harijan, Rahul Kumar and Suraj Chawan; all working in an industrial estate nearby. "They began running away but we caught them in the forest after a chase," a local said.
They were tied to a tree and thrashed until police arrived and arrested them. The Quepem police have registered an offense under sections 354 - outraging modesty of IPC and section 8 of Goa Children's Act 2003.
