Telcordia bags five-year deal from Unitech Wireless

New Delhi, June 29 : Telcordia, a global communication software service provider, Monday said it has bagged a five-year multi-million dollar contract from Unitech Wireless to manage its database of pre-paid customers.

"We have been awarded a five-year multi-million dollar contract by Unitech for implementing our 'real-time charging solution'," Anuj Kapur, country head Telcordia, told IANS Monday.

Real-time charging is a customer management solution, which will provide customised services like special schemes and promotions to pre-paid subscribers of a telecom company.

Unitech Wireless, the telecom arm of realty major Unitech Ltd, "will implement this solution across our network", Kapur said.

"Since almost 90 percent of the mobile subscribers in India are on the pre-paid platform, it's important for operators to this technology," he added.

US-based Telcordia is already implementing its software solutions for three other telecom operators in India - Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices and Aircel.

Unitech Wireless, in which Norway-based Telenor has 67 percent stake, plans to launch GSM-based services in the Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala circles by year-end.

The company has spectrum for 21 telecom circles, excluding Delhi.

Unitech Wireless has already tied up with companies like France's Alcatel-Lucent, Chinese telecom network equipment maker Huawei Technologies and domestic IT giant Wipro to support its GSM roll-out.

Telcordia has also been awarded mobile number portability (MNP) licence by the Department of Telecom (DoT) for implementing MNP in southern and eastern regions of the country.

MNP would allow users to switch operators without changing numbers.

MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions India, a joint venture between Telcordia Technologies and Gurgaon-based DTC Pvt Ltd will implement the services in southern region.
