India will work with like-minded nations on CO2 emissions: PM
New Delhi, Nov 8 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today made it abundantly clear that India will work with like-minded countries to address issues of climate change at the coming global Copenhagen summit on environment.
The Prime Minister made these remarks while answering question posed by World Economic Forum Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab after delivering his address at the India Economic Summit here.
The question pertained to India’s stand at the mega global summit next month and his expectations from Copenhagen.
In many words, the Prime Minister said regrettably eyebrows were being raised at developing countries, even though the main culprits were industrialised nations for excessive carbon dioxide emissions.
It was thus incumbent on the developing countries to provide more capital flows to fund clean technology, which should be provided at cheaper rate.
"Climate change is a reality," the Prime Minister remarked, adding that it was time to address these issues squarely by the global community.
"We have an obligation to work with like-minded countries to ensure a purposeful response to issues of climate change," he said.
Expressing concern over the carbon dioxide accumulation, Dr Singh said, "We have not done it. This is largely because of 150 years of industrialisation in the developed countries.’’
