Security net around Midnapore on eve of Buddha's visit
Midnapore, Nov 6 : This district headquarters town of West Midnapore was today wrapped in a security blanket ahead of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's two-day visit beginning tomorrow.
The small town has been beseiged by a large contingent of police since morning. Security forces were leaving nothing to chance, particularly in view of the landmine blast when Mr Bhattacharjee's convoy was passing in this district on November 2 last year.
The police were inspecting every car and motor cycle in search of suspected Maoists or Peoples Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) activists trying to take shelter with possible ulterior motive.
They were also searching both flanks of the main road trying to find out whether any Improvised Explosive Device(IED) or landmine had been planted.
Parts of the entire road between Kolaghat, end point of East Midnapore district, and Midnapore town on National Highway 6(Mumbai Road) were being dug up in search of these materials.
The chief minister will hold a series of deliberations with senior district officials on November 7 and 8 on the law and order situation and is expected to announce a Rs 1600 crore development package for the Junglemahal areas, especially trouble-torn Lalgarh.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the town following declaration by the PCAPA as well as the Trinamool Congress to separately demonstrate in front of the chief minister’s convoy when he reaches Midnapore town tomorrow.
