Spotify Reverts to Classic Icon After Disco Ball Backlash

Spotify has reverted to its original 2D iPhone app icon after a disco-ball-themed redesign faced widespread user criticism. The temporary makeover was introduced for the platform's 20th anniversary in May. Users complained the disco ball looked pixelated and visually displeasing on small screens. Spotify had promised the original icon would return "in a few weeks" and has now delivered on that promise.

Spotify returns to old icon after disco ball app icon backlash

Los Angeles, June 12

After backlash, Spotify has reverted to its original 2D iPhone app icon. The company's disco-ball-themed logo makeover proved unpopular with many users, who criticised the redesign and called for a return to the familiar classic icon.

The disco-ball-inspired Spotify iOS icon was introduced as a temporary tribute to the platform's 20th anniversary in May. The makeover coincided with "Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s)," a mobile-exclusive in-app experience that lets users revisit their listening history and relive their musical journey over the years. While the celebratory redesign drew plenty of attention, it was always intended to be a short-term change.

Some people had defended Spotify's disco-ball as a festive and fun -- and an example of a big company taking a creative risk with its well-known logo. But many Spotify users voiced displeasure at the change-up, with some complaining that the disco ball looked pixelated on a small phone screen and, generally, was visually displeasing, as per Variety.

After promising on May 17 that the original icon would return "in a few weeks," Spotify has finally brought back the familiar logo on iOS.

Honestly, I thought the disco ball was a fun little nod to their 20th anniversary. It's not like they were going to keep it forever. People need to chill out and enjoy some creativity. But I guess for Indian users with older phones, the pixelation issue was real. Fair enough.

Spotify should have tested the icon on different screen sizes before rolling it out. In India, many of us use mid-range phones where the resolution isn't as high. The disco ball looked like a smudge on my OnePlus. I'm relieved they listened to feedback. Ab toh theek hai! 🔄

I don't understand the fuss. It's just an app icon. The real issue is why Spotify's music recommendations in India are still so poor. They recommend Bollywood songs I listened to in 2019, while ignoring my current playlist. Fix the algorithm, not the icon! 🤷‍♂️

As someone who uses Spotify daily in Bangalore, I actually liked the disco ball. It felt festive and matched the "party" theme. But I get why people wanted the old one back—it's iconic. Spotify should have kept it longer as an optional icon in settings, like a little easter egg. Missed opportunity. 🌟

Main to iPhone use karta hoon, and the disco ball looked fine on my screen. But I have friends with Android phones who complained it was blurry. Spotify should've optimized it better. Still, it's good they reverted quickly. User feedback matters, especially in a market like India where we have diverse devices. Respect! 👏
