Initiative to expand e-governance in rural Tripura

Agartala, Nov 5 : As many as 145 Community Service Centres(CSC) would be operationlised soon in Tripura covering thousands of village panchayats in all 40 revenue blocks.

Principal Secretary of Information Technology L K Gupta informed the media here today that besides strengthening telecommunication network, Tripura had successfully implemented State Wide Area Network (SWAN) project in January, leading to the setting up of CSCs.

''The issue of telecommunication network was discussed on October 27 in New Delhi in presence of the Union IT minister and top officials. The ministry made commitment that the upgradation of network will be taken care of,'' Mr Gupta said.

He pointed out that Tripura was poised for a leap with successful completion of SWAN and it had become the sixth state in the country to have successfully commissioned SWAN after Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Tripura SWAN, a state wide computer data, voice and video network connecting 60 points of presence (PoPs) connected to the optical fibre cable (OFC) backbone up to block level and 60 PoPs were connected, he underlined.

The SWAN scheme envisages establishment of an intra-government network with a minimum of 2 Mbps connectivity from the state headquarters to block level through district and sub-division headquarters for providing connectivity to facilitate rolling out of citizen-centric services.

Tripura was also the first state to have successfully engaged an independent Third Party Auditor(TPA) to monitor the performance of SWAN with a view to ensuring desired Quality of Service(QoS) by the network operator and bandwidth service provider, Mr Gupta added.

To attract outside investors, especially for software development, the government had initiated a package of incentives to set up industry.
