Brandy gets crops heady, give higher yields
Coimbatore, Nov 3 : It may seem funny but it is true. Farmers in the Sathyamangalam Area of Erode District in Tamil Nadu use local brandy or whisky to control pest and get better yield from the crops.
Talking to UNI here today, Mr Nataraj, a local farmer, said he used 'Monitor,' the cheapest brandy available, along with ''Bibrallic Acid'' to better the yields of Banana, Cauliflower, Onion and Cabbage crops.
The farmer, who is also the Secretary of the Bhavani River Drinking Water and Groundwater Project, said over 100 farmers in this part of the area used the concoction.
The farmers usually mixed 30 mg of ''Bibrallic Acid'' per 12 litre of the water. Since the acid did not dissolve in water, agriculture scientists suggested mixing it with alcohol.
Since purchasing alcohol would be difficult, farmers brought local brandy or whisky to mix the acid which led to greater yields.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Vegetable Crop Scientist L Pugazendhi said though it was not advisable, farmers used the method as they could not get alcohol.
