Nickeldeon, Raveena Tandon announce Nov 7 as 'Playathon Day'

Mumbai, Oct 23 : To encourage children to adopt the fast vanishing habit of playing outdoors across the world, kids entertainment channel Nickelodeon will organise the country's first 'Playathon Day' on November 7.

With a slogan of ''Lets Just play'', the ten-hour long event to be held in Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Bangalore and Hyderabad will have kids rediscover the joy of playing a variety of outdoor games and exercising their muscles. Children from other cities and towns can join in the movement by posting their activities on the channel's Internet site. These images will be aired by the channel at a later date.

Explaining the concept here today, Nick India, general manager and senior vice president, Nina Elavia Jaipuria said, ''Playing has got out of fashion among kids. Even among parents it has got deprioritized and sacrificed to the alter of studies, homework and other activities. What we are trying to do is make playing 'cool' again and encourage kids to go out and play.'' Jaipuria said the channel will go blank on November seven and hope that upto seven million will hit the outdoors. The channel's popular characters will also encourage their young audiences to join in the fun.

Supporting the channel's initiative, Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon reminisced,'' Kids have forgotten to play in the computer age. Everything-from playing to watching television is good in equal doses. I remember playing ''lagoori'' (seven-stones), hide-and-seek and other games when I was young. We used to consider bandages and band-aid as badges of honour.''
