The Japanese government has honoured Delhi's former Metro chief E. Sreedharan for promoting friendly relations between the two countries through Delhi Metro.

Sreedharan, also principal advisor to the Metro, was conferred the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star" at an event held in Tokyo Wednesday.

He received an insignia and certificate from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Sreedharan attributed the honour to the "entire Delhi Metro family" and said: "I have been conferred with the award because of the achievements of the Delhi Metro Rail Corp."

The Japan International Cooperation Agency has funded Delhi Metro.
