Foreign flavour for Indian dances, musical instruments

New Delhi, Oct 10 : Kathak from China, sitar and tabla from France, Bharatanatyam from Russia and Kazakhstan, flute from Mexico and Odissi from Malaysia - international artistes will perform Indian dances and play instruments here Oct 14-15.

The International Dance and Music Festival is a presentation by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) at the Kamani Auditorium.

These artistes have received ICCR scholarships and learnt classical dance and musical instruments in India either at a dance institution or from a guru, said an ICCR statement released Thursday.

Akmaral Kainazarova, director and founder of Centre of Indian classical Dance in Almaty, Kazakhstan, will present Bharatanatyam on day one.

During their many trips to India, Sylvie Hiely and Laurent Gherzi became interested in Indian sitar and tabla. The French duo will present "jugalbandi" (combo of two musicians) on the inaugural day.

Their act will be followed by Malaysia-based Sumathi Chandra, Nritta Ganeshi Manoharan and Shangita Manoharan performing Odissi dance.

Second day celebrations will begin with Maria Zhiltsova and Zoya Smirnova from Russia performing Bharatanatyam. Mexico-based flautist Nathalie Ramirez Tovar will play both bamboo and metal flute, flirting with the tones of Spanish, Jazz and Hindustani music.

The cultural fiesta will end with Zhang Xiaoqing from China showing her Kathak skills.
