The Election Commission on Friday announced the dates for the elections in five states of Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram, informing that the democratic exercise would be held from Nov 11 to Dec 4 to elect new assemblies.

Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath told a press conference that while Chhattisgarh would go for two phased polls on Nov 11 and 19, in Madhya Pradesh there would be a single phase election on Nov 25.

In Rajasthan the poll would be single phase on Dec 1.

Delhi and Mizoram will go to polls on Dec 4 in single phase.

He said about 11 crore voters would exercise their franchise in the five states.

In almost all the states the main fight would be between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

By-elections for two seats in Gujarat (Surat) and Tamil Nadu would be held on Dec 4.

Counting will be held on Dec 8.

The assembly polls are crucial and seen as semifinals to the grand finale that is the general elections in 2014.
