Arvind Kejriwal begins indefinite fast
New Delhi, Mar 23 : Social activist turned Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) architect Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday started his indefinite fast at the Raj Ghat here to protest against rising electricity and water prices in Delhi.
Kejriwal said: "Electricity and water prices have been increased in Delhi only because of corruption."
Kejriwal on Friday urged people of Delhi not to pay inflated electricity bills.
AAP tweeted: "From 23rd March 2013 Arvind Kejriwal is sitting on indefinite upwas against illegal increase in Electricity and water prices in Delhi."
Kejriwal last month targeted Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as he exposed the alleged nexus between the Delhi government and private power distribution companies.
"Electricity was privatized in Delhi in the year 2002. Distribution losses were very high at that time at 55 percent. Government claimed that with privatization these loses would be reduced and when these gains would be passed on to the consumers, the electricity tariff would come down. Since then, the distribution losses have actually come down from 55% to 15%," the AAP convener said in a press conference on Feb 1.
"Where did these gains go? Rather than being transferred to Delhi citizens, the entire gains have been cornered by electricity companies," Kejriwal said.
