Bhubaneswar, Oct 23

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said that nine Memoranda of Understanding and four investment intents were signed during his two-day visit to Mumbai to attend India Chem 2026, attracting proposed investments worth Rs 53,893.51 crore to the State and generating the potential for 20,210 jobs.

CM Majhi, who led the 'Team Odisha', returned to Bhubaneswar on Friday evening after attending the chemical and petrochemical conclave on October 22 and 23.

Briefing the media, the Chief Minister said that he discussed hosting this conference in Odisha next year with the Central Government and FICCI, and both have given the green signal. Majhi also announced on the occasion that 'Odisha Chem 2027' will be held in October next year.

The Chief Minister stated that 25 one-to-one meetings were held with various business leaders on the sidelines of the event. He held discussions with representatives of companies like POSCO India, JSW, and L&T, as well as firms from the United States and the European Union.

Among the major MoUs signed during the event, the Odisha Government signed an MoU with NLC India Ltd, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal, for a proposed investment of Rs 36,763.51 crore in the chemicals and energy sectors.

"Through these discussions, along with understanding their requirements, they also came to know what facilities and opportunities are available for investing in Odisha. This has helped foster a better understanding with various prospective investors. These companies have a keen interest in investing in Odisha," said Majhi.

Acknowledging the strong support extended by Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers J.P. Nadda for facilitating these discussions with companies, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to him.

"This conference has helped us move towards achieving our goal of diversifying from a metal-based economy to a chemical-based economy. A complete industrial ecosystem will be developed in Odisha by establishing all types of interconnected industries, including metals, metal downstream, chemicals, petrochemicals and plastics. This will enable Odisha to become a strong pillar in achieving the goal of building an Atmanirbhar Bharat," CM Majhi added.

Reader’s Guide · AI-assisted, based only on the report above

What the report makes clear: Odisha has signed investment proposals at India Chem 2026 and plans its own chemical conclave in October 2027.

Still open: The report does not yet say what timelines, land or approvals these proposals require before they become operational.

Another way to look at it: Proposed investment figures are intents, and the jobs and plants depend on how many convert into construction.

What should Odisha prioritise to turn these investment proposals into working projects?
