Sharif said he looked forward to meeting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN and a exchange between the two is expected on Sunday.
"Pakistan and India can prosper together, and the entire region would benefit from our cooperation. We stand ready to re-engage with India in a substantive and purposeful dialogue," Sharif told the General Assembly.
He said invited Prime Minister Singh to discuss all outstanding issues and the Indian leader had reacted positively.
The meeting will be the first since Sharif was re-elected in May for his third term as Pakistani PM.
In his address Sharif said that he condemned terrorism in all forms and manifestation and stereotyping of Muslims as extremists and terrorists must stop.
Sharif also said that the suffering of people of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be brushed under carpet and they should be given the right to self-determination.
