Ashok Dinda's fiery spell of 7/85 earned Bengal to script first win in this season's Ranji Trophy as they beat Group B leader Uttar Pradesh by eight wickets at Eden Gardens here on Monday.


The victory rekindled their hopes of reaching the quarter final of the tournament.

Pace duo Ashok Dinda and Sourav Sarkar shared ten wickets between them as they skittle Uttar Pradesh 140 all out in 18.1 overs.

Bengal's eight wickets win over the visitors earned the hosts six points to total 18 from seven games with one match in hand to qualify for the knockout stage.

This was also first defeat for P Chawla's side in six matches as they stranded atop the Group B with 20 points, followed by Punjab also 20 points.

Bengal took the match under control on second day (Sunday) when captain Laxmi Ratan Shulka's 8th first class century (117) surpassed UP's first innings score of 212 as the host posted 284 all out with 72 runs lead.

Asoke Dinda, who took 3/75 in the first innings, fired again on Eden Gardens pitch during the second innings as he grabbed seven wickets in 85 runs in 24.4 overs. It was his carrier second best bowling in the first class match.

His victims were Digvijay Singh (16), M Kaif (0), P Gupta (16), Parvinder Singh (17), E Dwivedi (0), P Chawla (0) and R P Singh (1).

Barring opener M Dagar (33) and unbeaten tail-ender A Murtaza ( 43) no other UP batsmen could face the fury from Dinda and Sourav Sarkar, whose total haul was 7/84 in two innings.
