New Delhi, Oct 26

India's immersive technology market is projected to reach $7.82 billion by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of 29.8 per cent, positioning the country as the fastest-growing regional market in Asia Pacific, an official factsheet said on Monday.

The growth is being supported by India's digital ecosystem, expanding middle class and rising e-commerce adoption, the statement said.

Building capabilities in research, startups, talent, content and indigenous technologies can help India shape the next generation of immersive experiences and strengthen its position in the global digital economy, it added.

Immersive technologies are an emerging suite of technologies that create interactive, engaging and realistic digital experiences. Unlike conventional digital media, these technologies can engage multiple senses and create a stronger sense of presence.

The three most common forms of immersive technology are virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), collectively referred to as extended reality (XR).

Immersive technologies are expanding across education, industry and creative sectors, supported by initiatives under the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) ecosystem. The Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), established as a National Centre of Excellence, collaborates with global technology companies including Google, Meta, Adobe and Netflix to strengthen creative education, skills and innovation.

As of March 2026, IICT has introduced 18 courses across various domains of the AVGC-XR sector, with over 135 students enrolled.

Another report said that India's gaming sector is projected to grow from $3.8 billion in 2024 to $9.2 billion by FY29. National platforms such as the WAVES summit are showcasing India's creative and immersive media capabilities to a global audience.

The Union Budget 2026-27 allocated Rs 250 crore for AVGC Content Creator Labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges across India.

Platforms such as UPI, Aadhaar, DigiLocker, UMANG and BHASHINI have expanded access to services and information.

As digital platforms become more widespread, the next opportunity is to make these interactions more interactive, visual and experiential, the statement noted. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence, high-speed connectivity and computing are enabling this shift from simply accessing digital services to experiencing them.

What the report makes clear: The report sets out official projections for India's immersive technology market and the skilling and budget measures backing it.

Still open: The report does not yet say how these projections were calculated or which companies and states stand to gain most.

Another way to look at it: Rapid market growth depends on talent pipelines, so the pace of course rollout and student uptake will matter as much as the headline figure.

Do you think India's immersive tech push can create enough skilled jobs to match this growth?
