Mandela's body arrives in Qunu

Johannesburg, Dec 14 : Former South African president Nelson Mandela's body arrived at his ancestral home village of Qunu in South Africa's Eastern Cape region where the state funeral will take place on Sunday.

Escorted by two fighter jets, the coffin carrying the anti-apartheid icon's body was flown to Qunu from Waterkloof airbase in Pretoria on a C130 military aircraft, reports said.

The state funeral will be held on Sunday.

"The funeral programme starts at 8 am and ends at 10 am," the government said in a statement.

The Nobel peace laureate and iconic anti-apartheid leader passed away at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg on Dec 5. He was 95.

Meanwhile, South African peace icon Desmond Tutu on Saturday said he will not attend Mandela's state funeral as he has not been invited to it.

"Much as I would have loved to attend the service to say a final farewell to someone I loved and treasured, it would have been disrespectful to Tata to gatecrash what was billed as a private family funeral. Had I or my office been informed that I would be be welcome there is no way on earth that I would have missed it," Archbishop Tutu said in a statement.
