Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today directed the District Collectors to assess the damages in the rains and hail storm triggered by Nilam in the coastal districts and submit report to the governmnent.
Mr Patnaik, who chaired a high level meeting at the state secretariat here, also asked the Collectors of the affected districts to provide adequate relief to the people and undertake the repair of roads, irrigation projects and other structures on a war footing.
Official sources said Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Cuttack and Puri districts were much affected in the heavy rains and hail storm caused by Neelam.
Several houses were damaged in these districts while in some places the embankments were breached and minor irrigation projects were damaged.
At some places the roads were also badly damaged due to heavy rains which continued for last three days.
Meanwhile,the Odisha government has decided to enhance the compensation amount for those killed in heavy rains, cyclones and other natural calamities from the existing Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh.
The Revenue, Disaster and Mitigation department has been asked to pay the enhanced compensation to the next of kin of the victims.
