The India Meteorological Department, Bhopal centre, on Monday evening issued a fresh warning of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy to very heavy rain over several Madhya Pradesh districts.
According to the bulletin, moderate thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rain are likely over Sehore, Dewas, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Sagar and Tikamgarh districts. Rainfall intensity in these areas is expected between 5 and 15 mm per hour, with a 30 to 60 per cent probability of cloud-to-ground lightning.
Light thunderstorms with lightning and light rain are predicted over a wider region including Harda, Narmadapuram, Pachmarhi, Guna, Shivpuri, Ashoknagar, Niwari, Orchha, Chhatarpur, Khajuraho, Panna, Satna, Chitrakoot, Mandla, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Singrauli, Shahdol, Anuppur, Amarkantak, Dindori, Maihar, Balaghat, Jabalpur, Umaria, Bandhavgarh, Narsinghpur, Shajapur, Rajgarh, Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Damoh and Katni. In these districts, rainfall is expected to remain below 5 mm per hour with less than 30 per cent probability of lightning.
The IMD listed possible impacts of heavy and very heavy rainfall, including waterlogging in low-lying areas; disruption of road, rail and air traffic due to water accumulation and poor visibility; risk to old and weak structures; temporary disruption of power supply; and minor damage to standing crops, orchards and plantations. Isolated incidents of damage to life, livestock and property cannot be ruled out.
Residents have been advised to stay away from low-lying areas and temporary shelters near rivers or drains. People should avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and move indoors or into strong buildings. Secure or vacate unprotected structures if necessary. The Meteorological Centre has also recommended alternate power arrangements and contingency plans for traffic delays.
Citizens are urged to stay clear of overflowing rivers and streams and avoid venturing near water bodies where water levels may rise suddenly. The Meteorological Centre has advised the public to monitor official updates regularly. Authorities in the alerted districts have been asked to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to minimise inconvenience and ensure public safety during the period of the nowcast.
