Goa govt extends fishing ban

Panaji, Mar 18 : The Goa government has introduced a scheme for fishing community in memory of BJP minister Mathany Sadanha, who died on massive heart attack on March 21 last year. While presenting the State Budget for year 2013-14, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said a provision of Rs three crore has been made under the scheme to boost fishing in the state which will also include upgradation of existing infrastructure.

Grant of Rs 20,000 has been made for canoes with outboard motors.

The announcement comes with a jolt as the government on the other hand extended commercial fishing ban to 75 days from existing 45 days to enable fish breed.

This means that all four major jetties from where a fleet of 1000-odd trawlers venturing out for fishing will be sealed.
