Brit man's toes grafted onto hand after losing fingers in crash
London, Feb. 2 : A man from Leeds, who lost three fingers in a horrific motorbike crash, underwent a 12-hour operation to get two of his toes grafted on his right hand.
Jonas Barber, 31, who runs his own business and lives with his wife Carla, 30, and three daughters - Amelia, 8, Madison, 6, and Freya, 4, was injured during a race meet in Lincolnshire in July 2011, the Mirror reported.
Racing enthusiast Barber was clipped by another rider at around 80mph and his fingers had got caught in the brake disc of his BMW.
But the hardy motorbike enthusiast calmly picked up his fingers and waited for help after the accident.
The doctors re-attached Barber's index finger but despite treatment with leeches, they had to remove it again after about a week.
Then last March, he had the toe transplant at Leeds, Spire Hospital and is now waiting for another operation to remove scar tissue.
The procedure was carried out by Prof Simon Kay, the pioneering surgeon who carried out the UK's first hand transplant.
Kay used the toe next to the big toe from each of Jonas' feet, providing him with large enough digit substitutes that didn't adversely affect foot function.
Right-handed Jonas says that he can write better with his new hand than he ever could with his left and his signature has hardly changed.
