Goa rape: Headmistress granted bail
Headmistress of the primary school Sharlet Furtado accused for negligence in duty that resulted in the rape of a minor in the school toilet in Vasco was on Tuesday granted bail by the Goa Children's Court.
As a pre-condition for release, she is asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 25,000 with one surety of the like amount and is barred from leaving the state.
A week after the incident on Jan 14, Furtado was on Sunday arrested by Mormugao police for negligence. She was remanded to seven days police custody by a local court in South Goa.
Meanwhile, a BJP legislator's remark that the absconding accused is known to the headmistress has added an interesting twist especially when there are floating rumours about the accused man's arrest. "How is it possible that the man enters the school compound when there is enough security in place? I guess, the accused is known to both headmistress and the security guard who was on duty at the gate," MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh, who is heading an inquiry into another rape case of a school girl, told reporters.
For the past couple of days, there have been rumours that a person, whose facial description is similar to that in the police sketch, was arrested in Bangalore and is said to the related to the headmistress.
Earlier on Tuesday, it was heard that the rapist was arrested in Pune and being brought to Goa.
Director General of Police Kishan Kumar has appealed the public not to be carried away by rumours.
