One of the five people indicted for the brutal gang-rape and death of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi last month, that triggered an international outcry, is a minor, the man's lawyer has claimed.
One of the six people, who raped and fatally injured the medical student on a moving bus before throwing her off on the streets of Delhi on the night of Dec 16, has already claimed to be underage and is being tried by a juvenile court.
The legal counsel for Vinay Sharma, who is among the five people in the 1,000-page chargesheet submitted by Delhi Police, has now requested the court hearing the case that his client also be tried in a juvenile court, media reports said.
On Dec 16, the six accused gang-raped and brutalised the 23-year-old girl with an iron rod on a moving bus. The victim succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital on Dec 29.
The incident triggered nationwide outrage against rising cases of rape and brutalization of women in India with people pouring into the streets of New Delhi for days and demanding a change of law and strict punishment of the accused.
