Annapurna Maharana passes away
Eminent freedom fighter Annapurna Maharana died at her Bakharaba residence at Cuttack late last night after prolonged illness.
She was 96.
Maharana had been suffering from old age related ailments and was bed ridden for the last few months.
Her husband Sarat Maharana predeceased her three years ago.
She is survived by her two sons.
A staunch follower of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Maharana had joined the freedom struggle at a very early age and was imprisoned by the British while she was barely 14.
She had accompanied Mahatma Gandhi in his padayatra from Puri to Bhadrak in 1934.
She was actively in the Bhoodan movement of Vinobha Bhave. She spent her entire life for the uplift of children, women and downtrodden.
She set up a school at Rayagada for the tribal children.
She was honoured with many awards including the Sarala Puraskar, Utkal Ratna, Radhanath Rath foundation award.
