Kolkata to host Winter National Bridge Championship
About twelve hundred players including top names of Indian bridge will be seen in action when the week long 54th Winter National Bridge Championship begins here at Geetanjali stadium on Sunday.
Briefing mediapersons at the Calcutta Sports Journalists Club, secretary of West Bengal Bridge Association, Arijit Guha said that beside Ruia Gold and Ruia Silver (team championship) pairs event would also be held during this period.
Guha said that cream of Indian bridge including Kamal Mukherjee, Subhas Gupta,Pritish Kushari, R Venkat Raman, Kiran Nadar and B Prabhakar, all of whom played for the country earlier would be in the fray for the top honours.
Other notable entries include Manas Mukherjee, Subir Mazumdar, Sumit Mukherjee, Debabrata Mazumdar, Sandip Dutta and Amarnath Banerjee who represented India at the World Bridge Championship held in France during August last, where they reached last sixteen out of about 100 teams from all over the world.
Guha said the favourite and top rated teams in this national are champions Indian railways from Kolkata, Formidables and Dhampur Sugar from Delhi and Texan from Chennai.
Players from neighbouring Bangladesh would take part in the competition.
Speaking on the occasion President of Bridge Federation of India (BFI) N R Kirubakamoorthy said that BFI would take part at the next World Junior and Youth (under 25) and Girls (under 16) bridge championship to be held in Atlanta, United States during 2013.
The exact date for this meet is yet to be decided, he added.
Kirubakaramoorthy said BFI has planned to popularise bridge among school and college students.
President of West Bengal Bridge Association Mukul Chatterjee said the championship offers a total prize money of rupees five lacs.
Around 160 teams would contest in the team event while more than four hundred pairs would compete in the pairs event.
The championship will start at 10 a.m on Dec 16.
