How hotel staff takes 'creative' revenge on rude guests
A former hotel employee has revealed how hotel staff get back at rude guests in his new book Heads in Beds: A reckless Memoir of Hotel, Hustlers and So-Called Hospitality.
Jacob Tomsky, who had worked in hotels for more than a decade doing everything from valet parking to working behind the front desk, said the wealthier the guests the more likely they were to be loudly and wildly abusive, while celebrities are often the worst of them all.
"A lot of people are watching Downton Abbey now, and they think, 'Oh, I've got servants, too!'" News.com.au quoted him as saying.
"Especially the affluent, they treat people as they never would otherwise. Meanwhile, hardworking people - who might be getting screwed - won't say anything," he stated.
There are six inventive ways hotel staffs can use to get revenge on rude customers, according to Tomsky.
The first is keybombing - Guest being targeted with this method may have trouble accessing their room with their key card. Employee at the front desk love to watch with amusement when flustered guests return to get the key re-activated.
Then there are Minibar raids - Annoyed hotel staff often wander in and steal from mini-bars, or deliberately miscalculate your charges. If you've used valet parking, your car isn't safe either.
Guests should be cautious of their toothbrushes - it can be "fouled", Tomsky warns.
Angry staff can also give rude guest prank calls at night as Tomsky has confessed to making a drunken midnight phone call to freak out one particularly mean guest.
"I informed him he was an a--hole and he should sleep like s--t," Tomsky revealed in the book.
But he said it did make him feel better. "But I got to the point where I built a wall up. I got an incredibly thick skin, and I really didn't care," he wrote.
Those guests who cause a scene while checking in can probably be downgraded to a lousy room, this kind of revenge is termed as room karma.
"You probably could have had a really nice suite. And you'll never know it. I became the master of instant karma. And if I saw a Black AmEx - watch out," Tomsky said.
Annoyed staff can also play the game with gross drinkin glasses.
They may clean the drinking glasses with furniture polish, instead with soap and water.
